the unique growth pattern of the bacterial genus, Proteus. here it is seen on a blood agar plate. Proteus grows in a thin layer, some might say “film-like” state, termed “swimmer and swarmer” because of the wavy appearance that is created. obviously, the Proteus genus is ver motile, and is usually the main cause of urinary tract infections due to it’s extreme mobility and ability to utilize urea as a energy source by breaking it down via the enzyme Urease.
